The Location

A decade ago the search began for the most incredible location in SW Washington to build a dream compound to escape the city life.

Through a process of numerous land acquisitions, boundary line adjustments, and a short plat, the setting has become a reality.

First, the proximity:

Less than 35 minutes to the Portland International Airport, and under 20 minutes to Downtown Washougal. You’re far enough away from everything to embrace isolation when desired, but close enough to pop back into town for daily needs.

Second, the features:

Rolling pasture land with room to roam, mature forests to explore, a massive basalt cliff line and towering waterfall, incredible boulder fields that will make you feel tiny, and stunning views in nearly every direction.

R-5 Zoning means the minimum lot size is just 5 acres per buildable site.

The main home sits on nearly 50 acres, while the remaining 23 acres are already divided up as 3 more buildable lots.

Unless you experience it in person, it is impossible to describe how impressive this bluff is.

At the bottom of this photograph, the tops of those 100+ foot tall fir trees sit well below the view line from the home.

The Build

The goal was to create an eco friendly, hyper efficient, sustainable, cozy, and versatile cabin that can open up and embrace the endless natural beauty around or seal up to endure the harshest of storms with only the sound of an interior fire crackling beside you.

That mission was accomplished, and then some.

The first thing you’ll notice while approaching is the massive window wall bringing sunlight throughout the entire structure and the expansive views beyond.

If you haven’t heard of Enertia homes before, get ready to re-learn how homes can be built.

The large functional masonry heater fireplace is the focal point to the cozy atmosphere on this level’s living area.

An impeccable kitchen filled with Thermador appliances you would expect to match this calibre of home.

The incredible sun room serves as an expansion of the main living space.

Exploding with light at all hours of the day it also functions as the lungs of the home; hard-wired motorized upper windows, motorized blinds to separate the main living area from this room, open grated floors to the daylight basement below, and powerful ceiling fans help regulate temperatures year round.

Sitting up high does have its advantages.

From both the top deck and bottom patio your views are out of this world.

There are so many options on where to spend your time, but let’s explore the flexible open daylight basement.

A mixture of exposed concrete and finished walls help to scatter plenty of natural light around providing a surprisingly comfortable atmosphere.

In the summer, these partially buried walls and the slab floor underneath help keep the entire structure cool, whereas in the winter time your warm-board radiant floor heat kicks on and floats up through the uniquely designed structure to provide heat throughout all three levels.

Whether it’s to rinse off after a hard workout, or for guests staying downstairs, there is a full bathroom in the center of the basement.

The Primary Primary

Located just behind the main living area is the first primary bedroom with direct access to the sun room, ample floor space, and beautiful sunrises coming from the rolling meadows to the east.

The en-suite bathroom gives a spa like experience with a deep soaking tub and a large walk-in shower.

This room is a great place to see inside the shell of the structure. There are two main layers of solid Southern Yellow Pine tongue and groove walls.

Designed from the ground up around airflow and thermal dynamics, these two wall layers are mostly hidden on three sides of the home, but the window-filled sunroom is open to the daylight basement below to also take advantage of this temperature regulating effect.

The Secondary Primary

The top floor has a softer feel with wall to wall carpet in the other primary suite, windows looking into the sunroom below, as well as east facing windows peering out over the rolling meadows.

Another spa-like bathroom accessible directly from the bedroom as well as the central loft space.

Cross over the breezeway into the final bedroom; an oversized “bunk room” or bonus room for however you choose to use it.

Utility is often an afterthought.

Here, it was the beginning.

Before the main structure was started, a 4,100 square foot Quonset hut was erected to provide a space for any and all equipment to be housed.

And by “any” we do mean any.

The 8” thick solid slab can support a commercial grade loaded rock truck!

The UTV with snow-plow attachment, pallets of seasoned firewood & a pallet jack, metal shelving, a large chest freezer, and refrigerator
all come with the property!

The 10'x16' Tuff Shed Premier Pro Studio with hard wired electricity is heated and keeps your well water & filtration system protected year round.

Beside it sits a Kohler generator with underground 500 gallon propane tank to help you get through the longest of storms.

Inside the home you’ll find the laundry/utility room with a stunning soap-stone utility counter/sink area and drop-down clothes hanging rack above the washer/dryer.

Look closer at this image showing the two layers of shell; there’s more here than you might think. Both ‘layers’ of walls are made from laminated, heat treated Southern Yellow Pine to prevent rot and have extraordinary fire resistance, as well as repel pests, stop warping, and more.

The benefits of the Enertia home are plentiful, and you can read a lot more about them here.
